“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – Mark Twain
Anyone who knows me, knows that traveling is a passion of mine. The beginning of this passion was instilled in me by my parents, my dad in particular. He is also quite passionate about travel and took me, my brother, and mother on many adventures growing up.
The first time I left the United States I was 3 years old. We took a family cruise and visited some of our nearby neighbors in the Caribbean …..this was just one of many trips we took as I grew up. Besides our travels in the US we hit up most of the Caribbean and my first visit to another continent was to South America – Caracas Venezuela, in particular. My love of travel started with these initial explorations.
Besides instilling in me the love of travel, my dad also taught me how to be comfortable traveling and being outside your comfort zone. When I was barely 16 years old I took my first “solo” trip and visited New Zeleand on a summer student exchange program. The trip was for almost 5 weeks and we stayed in multiple cities in NZ where host families took in the students.
I left Texas and headed to Los Angeles to meet up with my fellow travelers. At that time it was the most thrilling and most intimidating moments of my life. For the first time I had to navigating a large international airport alone and meet a group of strangers with whom I would spend the next 5 weeks exploring NZ. I’ll write more later about this experience and how great it was. This was probably the point where I realized how much I really wanted to make sure I took the time to travel even more places in the world.
Twenty years later and many more destination visited – my love of travel has only grown. I’ve made some of the destinations on my “list” and have a long and growing list of other places to go. I have 37 days until my next adventure and can’t wait…….
Cheers!
