The past few days have been a wet, soggy, windy mess. Hurricane Harvey hit Rockport, TX and the subsequent rain that fell flooded my hometown of Houston. My heart aches for those affected by the storm and flooding.
But I must say in the days leading up to this storm hitting the Texas Coast, I saw way too much negative posts on my social media outlets. The change in tone since this natural disaster reminds how much we Americans are much like a family – maybe a dysfunctional one at times – but still a family. In the worst of times, your family tends to step up and show how much they really care and how good they really are.
While there are numerous good feeling stories coming out of this disaster, I would say one that has stuck me are the many everyday citizens stepping up with their boats to help out the government agencies and rescue teams. These people don’t need to risk their lives to help those stranded by the floods or hurricane damage but are doing it because they care. So for anyone who has done their part, I say thank you from one native Texan to you. This is my home – and Houston is my hometown. She will be back and strong again but until then I am glad there are good people out there helping those in need.
PS Other moments that made me smile was seeing images of a cattle drive thru an urban area to save them as well as the cab driver who took care of the hawk that took refuge in his cab on Friday.
